InnoPath Mobile Device Management Client Ported to Samsung u340 and u430 Featurephones

Surge in shipments of standards-based, FOTA-enabled phones demonstrates MDM industry leader’s operational capabilities

Samsung u340 and u430 Featurephones InnoPath Software, the leader in Mobile Device Management (MDM), recently announced Samsung is now shipping more than one million u340 featurephones per quarter with the InnoPath device management client preloaded. The Samsung u430, expected to be just as popular, is the latest phone to ship with InnoPath device management technology. The InnoPath client , coupled with the company’s server  at the wireless operator, helps avoid device recalls and provides a better end user experience with firmware updates over the air, or FOTA .

FOTA, a relatively new technology for North American operators, allows the update of firmware on devices such as mobile phones deployed in the field. In the past, firmware updates needed to be done by re-flashing the device at a retail store or service center. Because FOTA allows operators to upgrade features or patch firmware without needing to physically touch or recall the device, this technology is increasingly popular with operators trying to deliver the best possible subscriber experience. Indeed, some operators have mandated that all new phones ship with FOTA capability.

InnoPath not only offers the MDM industry’s only standards-based client and server solution, it uniquely couples a rich porting and verification program with testing tools such as the Server Simulator . InnoPath’s client technology consists of both the DM engine and the firmware update agent, known as the Device Update Agent (DUA). These are based on years of experience in working with major handset vendors. InnoPath’s ‘Port-to-Production’ program  addresses OEM goals for accelerated time-to-market of new devices, management of costs, and ultimately heightened uptake of new high ARPU handsets with maximum customer satisfaction. InnoPath works hand-in-hand with its OEM partners, such as Samsung, from initial client port though testing, until final acceptance by the wireless operator.

“The growing installed base of FOTA-enabled phones is evidence that this is a capability critical to both operators and to their handset vendor partners,” said Terry Hartsfield, vice president of Operations for InnoPath. “The ease in which our OEM partners can port the client to new phones is testament to our end-to-end operational capabilities.”

About InnoPath

InnoPath Software is the global leader in Mobile Device Management, a technology that enables wireless operators to better and more cost effectively manage and deliver revenue-generating services for consumers and enterprises. InnoPath’s standards-based server has proven successful at the largest wireless operators in the world, including AT&T, China Unicom, KDDI and Verizon Wireless. The InnoPath client has been adopted by leading handset manufacturers including Nokia, Samsung and LG. InnoPath was recently recognized by AlwaysOn as an AO Global 250 Winner. Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, InnoPath is privately held with offices around the world. For more information, visit www.innopath.com.

Aktino Names Bethe Strickland VP of Business Development

IRVINE, California, August 14, 2008 –Aktino, the leader in delivering high bandwidth Carrier Ethernet and broadband services over bonded copper, has named Bethe A. Strickland, a telecommunications industry sales veteran, as its Vice President of Business Development.

Strickland’s 20 years of experience in the telecom industry includes a 10-year carrier and channel sales role with ADTRAN in that company’s formative years, which extended beyond the 1994 ADTRAN initial public offering. Strickland also founded AERAS Networks, a broadband microwave radio company, and most recently served as executive vice president of marketing and channel development at GenBand.

RAD Brings Olympic Coverage to Chinese Provinces

BEIJING, August 11, 2008: China Radio International (CRI) has selected access equipment from RAD Data Communications to enable it to transmit video on demand (VOD) from the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.

CRI, which maintains a video server at the Olympics, recommended RAD’s RIC-155GE Gigabit Ethernet over STM-1 network termination unit (NTU) to China Telecom as a reliable gateway for transmitting its Ethernet-based video feed over existing SDH lines to various provincial capitals, including Chengdu (in Sichuan), Xian (in Shaanxi) and Changsha (in Hunan).

Using virtual concatenation technology, the RIC-155GE maps the video streams into VC-4 containers for transport across long-haul fiber connections. CRI first deployed RAD’s RIC-155GE in 2006 to run Ethernet-based video over traditional STM-1 circuits.

“CRI’s previous deployment of the RIC-155GE to carry Ethernet-based services over both wired and wireless SDH transport networks gave them the confidence to propose this solution to China Telecom for their mission-critical IPTV based Olympics coverage,” states Jeremy Zimman, Director of Operations in Greater China at RAD Data Communications. “The RIC-155GE is guaranteed to be a big winner at the Beijing Olympics.”

RAD’s RIC-155GE NTU provides carriers and service providers with a migration path for connecting IP devices with Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to existing SDH or SONET networks at an access rate of 155 Mbps. It is part of RAD’s suite of EtherAccess family of Ethernet access solutions. EtherAccess enables Quality of Service over low and high-speed SDH/SONET and PDH circuits from fractional and full E1/T1, E3/T3 and STM-1/OC-3 circuits to Gigabit Ethernet.

Acme Packet Nets Four New Customers in Canada

BURLINGTON, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Acme Packet® (NASDAQ: APKT), the leader in session border control solutions, today announced four new customers across Canada that are leveraging Acme Packet’s Net-Net® session border controllers (SBCs) for the delivery of trusted, first-class IP interactive communications. Broad-Connect Telecom, Call Genie, MTO Telecom and Protus have deployed Net-Net SBCs to provide security and SIP session control for delivery of a broad range of VoIP services. Acme Packet SBCs are now deployed in 20 service provider and enterprise networks in Canada.

Acme Packet’s new Canadian customers are using the Net-Net SBCs at both the access and interconnect borders, protecting their networks with the advanced security afforded by Acme Packet’s Net-SAFE® architecture for denial of service (DoS/DDoS) attack protection, network topology hiding and access control lists. In support of wireline access services, Acme Packet’s hosted NAT traversal feature maximizes service reach by enabling calls to traverse firewalls without disruption at customer sites. Three of the four customers—Call Genie, MTO Telecom and Protus— also use the Acme Packet SBC for SIP session routing, leveraging Acme Packet’s integrated routing database to map inbound calls to specific peers or application servers, simplifying their networks and minimizing capital expenditures.

Acme Packet’s new service provider customers are located throughout Canada and include IP telephony service providers (ITSPs), Internet service providers (ISPs) and application service providers (ASPs):

  • Broad-Connect Telecom, a SIP termination provider and ITSP in Toronto, uses Acme Packet’s Net-Net Session Director (SD) to support its hosted VoIP and SIP trunking services for small and medium businesses, as well as SIP interconnects with peering partners.

  • Call Genie Inc., a mobile local search and advertising company with offices in Toronto, Calgary, San Francisco and London, uses Acme Packet to support its voice-enabled search solution. Call Genie delivers the voice-activated directory lookups to its major North American service provider customers across connections secured and routed by Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs.

  • MTO Telecom, an ISP in Montreal, uses Acme Packet SBCs to interconnect with long distance and PSTN termination partners in support of its hosted VoIP services. Acme Packet’s Local Route Table (LRT) allows MTO Telecom to associate SIP endpoints with directory numbers for the purpose of call termination.

  • Protus, a software as a service (SaaS) provider in Ottawa, has deployed a pair of Net-Net SDs in a high-availability configuration in two different locations for geographic redundancy to support its hosted Internet fax service MyFax® and my1voiceâ„¢, a virtual PBX phone service for small and medium businesses.

“During our testing, Acme Packet’s solutions proved to have the richest functionality in terms of architectural flexibility, interoperability, session control and feature depth,” said Dominic Ogbonna, director of technology at Broad-Connect Telecom. “The Net-Net SBCs have enabled us to cost-effectively maximize the reach and quality of our services, giving us the competitive edge we need to continue to win customers and grow our business.”

“As a leading provider of high quality SaaS communications tools for businesses, we need robust security and quality controls for our network,” added Simon Nehme, CTO, Protus. “Acme Packet’s session border controllers delivered those requirements so that Protus can provide a superior user experience.”

“Service providers of all types and sizes need the tools and capabilities to differentiate their offerings while keeping costs down,” explained Seamus Hourihan, vice president of marketing and product management at Acme Packet. “Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs are flexible, scalable solutions that enable the trusted delivery of a wide variety of value-added services to help these providers create a market for their services.”
