CALTRANS and California Highway Patrol Utilize Proxim Wireless and ICx Technologies for Life-Saving “Fog Pilot” Project


Integrated Weather Detection and Traffic Safety System to Reduce Deadly Accidents Caused by Fog and Extreme Weather


Proxim Wireless Corporation (NASDAQ: PRXM), a leading provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play, today announced that the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) are utilizing technology from Proxim Wireless and ICx Technologies (NASDAQ: ICXT) for an innovative system designed to reduce the frequency and severity of car crashes caused by fog and extreme weather. The “Fog Pilot” project is a comprehensive fog and reduced-speed warning system that will help protect motorists along a 12-mile stretch of freeway along State Route (SR) 99 in California’s Central Valley. This particular stretch of freeway is notorious for dangerous fog conditions, and was the site of a deadly 86-car collision in November of 2007.

 “The combination of harsh fog conditions and irresponsible driving often result in deadly multi-vehicle accidents along this stretch of road,” said Central Division CHP Chief Jim Abrames. “This system will play a key role in identifying and alerting drivers to dangerous conditions, empowering them with the information necessary to take precaution and, ultimately, to save lives.”


As fog conditions increase in severity, traffic speeds tend to decrease rapidly. When you combine the rapid decrease in traffic speeds with decreased visibility, it makes it easy for faster traffic coming into heavy fog zones to collide with the slower traffic that they cannot see. The Fog Pilot system keeps drivers updated on upcoming speeds and visibility conditions in advance, so that drivers can slow down and adjust their driving as necessary.

The Fog Pilot system, which was completed at the end of the year and is now operational, integrates multiple technologies including weather detection stations, microwave vehicle/motion detectors, visibility sensors, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and changeable message signs. All of these components communicate and are connected wirelessly via Proxim’s Tsunamiâ„¢ MP.11 5054 base stations and 5012 subscriber units, which utilize high performance, license-free WiMAX technology to wirelessly transmit the large amount of data generated by the multiple components.  All of this data and all of the components in the system are centrally managed and controlled by ICx’s Cameleon ITS Transportation Management Software, which ties everything together into one integrated system. ICx worked closely with Moonblink Communications, a value added distributor focused on wireless technologies, to identify the technologies that would best serve this project.


A total of 21 weather sensors, traffic sensors placed every quarter mile, and a series of CCTV cameras all detect and gather a great deal of information including the severity of the fog, driver visibility, amount of traffic, traffic speeds and more. All of this information is then fed back to the Cameleon software via Proxim’s wireless radios, which are centrally managed via Proxim’s network management system, ProximVision ES. The Cameleon software then utilizes the data to create the warnings and updates that are communicated to drivers via the large changeable message signs, which are placed every half mile.


The key to driver safety, however, is how fast these alerts can be delivered to drivers. The Fog Pilot system uses advanced automation technology that can process and deliver the weather warnings automatically to drivers. The high performance and low latency of Proxim’s wireless technology enables these automated alerts to be processed and delivered to drivers in under 30 seconds.


“We have complete confidence that this system will both reduce accidents and save lives during the winter fog season,” said CALTRANS District 6 Director, Malcolm X. Dougherty. “Our $12 million investment in this system will be well worth it if it can help save even one life.”

Comptel Dynamic OSS Sets New Benchmark for Mediation and Real-Time Charging Performance


IBM benchmark highlights Comptel’s ability to protect Communications Service Providers against the growing mediation and charging requirements that ‘lifestyle’ services demand


Comptel Corporation (OMX Helsinki: CTL1V), the leading vendor of dynamic Operations Support System (OSS) software, today announced the results of an extensive scalability and performance benchmarking study undertaken in conjunction with IBM.


The study demonstrates the unique capability of the newest versions of Comptel’s Convergent Mediation and Charging Solutions to address the scalability issue that ‘lifestyle’ services present for Communication Service Providers (CSPs). As these content and bandwidth-heavy lifestyle services are packaged and billed to end-customers in increasingly diverse ways, service providers will require systems that are able to scale to the corresponding exponential increase in mediation and charging support within OSS systems.


“Lifestyle services require CSPs to improve their real-time control and management of services as customers will expect more flexibility in the way these services are packaged together and charged to them.” said Simo Sääskilahti, Comptel SVP Products and Solutions. “In a service provider’s production environment, this translates into a dramatic increase in the number of mediation and charging events that the OSS must be able to handle.”


In this benchmarking exercise, Comptel was able to achieve near linear scaling to over 1.9 billion events per hour on a single IBM Power 595 server with a 64-way POWER6 microprocessor.


“Scalability of this magnitude is critical to meeting the dynamic needs of tier-one service providers and those looking to consolidate multiple billing back-office components into a convergent platform,” continued Sääskilahti. “Comptel is comfortable to deliver our solutions on IBM technology for our largest customers, some quickly approaching 100 million subscribers.”


“The combination of Comptel’s Convergent Mediation and Charging software and the IBM technology is a great cost effective option for customers that require the highest levels of performance and scalability,” said Pierre Perdaems, IBM Telecommunication Servers - EMEA CTO. “By achieving nearly two billion events per hour with Comptel Convergent Mediation and Charging, the IBM Power series server family has again demonstrated why it is proving to be the architecture of choice for CSPs worldwide.”


Today, Comptel has 16 customers on Power series servers supporting over 200 million subscribers, including Airtel, DTAC, Idea Cellular, Telefónica Móviles Argentina and Vodafone Essar. IBM Power series servers are the servers of choice for tier one service providers, with Power 6 servers providing PowerVM – IBM’s industry-leading virtualisation technology – to allow optimal flexibility, server consolidation and cost reduction.


Benchmark Details

* Conducted at IBM Telecommunications Infrastructure Center for BSS in Montpellier France, the benchmark included various workloads such as offline streams, online streams, charging, rating, and customer balance management activities using a variety of conditions modeled after real-life communications service providers. Several joint customers provided validated test scenarios.


* Convergent scenarios covered modeled conditions equal to 1.5 billion subscribers in a developing economy prepaid/postpaid business model. Specific test scenarios for GGSNs and other network components generating high record volumes requiring complex stream aggregation were defined and tested by IBM Global Services.


* The results verified Comptel Convergent Mediation Solution 6.1 and Comptel Charging Solution 6.1 core components’ near linear scalability utilising in-memory data storage. Memory usage correlates to core functionalities, such as aggregation, correlation, duplicate checking, and rating which dynamically drives how many parallel sessions to hold against the data store.


* The benchmark tested Comptel’s solutions running on a single IBM POWER6 processor-based Power 595 server, with IBM AIX version 6.1 operating system and IBM PowerVM virtualisation technology, hosted by an IBM DS8300 storage subsystem.


Additionally, Comptel also ported Comptel Convergent Mediation Solution 6.1 and Comptel Charging Solution 6.1 to support IBM solidDB in-memory database and IBM BladeCenter, for more performance, scalability, and reliability options required for varying emerging and Greenfield market conditions. Comptel plans to make the Comptel Convergent Mediation and Charging Solutions generally available leveraging the high performance of IBM solidDB in-memory database. Comptel Charging Solution 6.1 is also being integrated by IBM into Aritel applying IBM SOA best practices.

CTO from Anthony Marano Company to Present a Case Study on Enterprise Mobile Convergence Using Agito’s RoamAnywhere at Leading Analyst Firm’s Wireless & Mobile Summit 2009


SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Feb. 10, 2009 – Agito Networks, Inc., the company delivering new technology in enterprise mobility, today announced that one of its enterprise mobile convergence customers has been named as a finalist for the Gartner Wireless & Mobile Excellence Award. 


Selection of the finalists for Gartner’s Wireless & Mobile Excellence Award was determined by Gartner analysts.  As a finalist, Chris Nowak, CTO of Agito Networks customer Anthony Marano Company, will present at the Gartner Wireless & Mobile Summit 2009, to be held Feb. 23 – 25 in Chicago.


Located near downtown Chicago, Anthony Marano Company serves the Midwest with fine fresh produce from its state-of-the-art distribution center.  The 400,000 square foot facility contains 73 docks to receive and ship more than 1,400 types of fresh produce.  With Agito’s RoamAnywhere Mobility Router, Anthony Marano Company enables continuous high-quality voice coverage for its mobile produce buyers and sellers, which need to be accessible at all times to receive and fulfill an average of 3,000 orders throughout the day.


According to Nowak, Anthony Marano Company’s large metal and concrete facility makes cellular communications impossible for the staff which is constantly on the move between produce areas, shipping docks, receiving docks, and internal and nearby offices.  Accessibility is critical because the staff deals with fresh produce, a perishable commodity.  A missed call could easily cost the company thousands of dollars, Nowak said.
