BSO Communication Selects the Ekinops 360 Dynamic Multi-Reach Transport platform to reinforce its service offering

Paris 17 March 2009 Ekinops, a leading provider of next generation solutions for metro, regional and long-haul optical transport and aggregation, has been chosen by next generation operator BSO Communication to provide optimized optical transport solutions for their network.

In addition to typical transport applications, BSO Communication was interested in a capability that would allow it to differentiate its service offerings to customers from those offered by other service providers. Upon BSO Communication’s request, Ekinops was able to deliver the capability to offer rate-managed 10Gig (10 gigabit per second) services and full rate GigE (Gigabit Ethernet) services over the same 10Gig wavelength. This enables BSO Communication to offer tailored services, while utilizing network bandwidth efficiently.

Thanks to the T-Chip, Ekinops’ innovative dynamic and programmable transport-on-a-chip technology at the heart of its 360 platform, the implementation of this differentiated and unique service offering has been a success, done in record time, allowing BSO Communication to be responsive to customer needs.

BSO Communication is the first Next Generation Operator to provide network solutions, integration services, and web hosting to its customers. With strong growth, BSO Communication is today present in more than 10 countries: France, Great Britain, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, and Hong Kong (China). For BSO Communication in addition to allowing for the delivery of new and unique services quickly the Ekinops 360 transport system architecture, based on the T-Chip technology, provides the highest standard of reliability.

BSO Communication will be using the Ekinops 360 platform for:

-Implementation of an Ethernet WDM transport network

-Equipment interconnection in its four major data centers located in the Paris area

-Transport of 10 Gbps signals in those data centers

As a Next Generation Operator, our customers expect the highest level of flexibility from us in providing them with services that meet their needs. Efficient and unique use of our network bandwidth allows us to better respond to this customer demand, said Frederic Dhieux, Technical Manager at BSO Communication. With the Ekinops 360 platform, our major objective was to optimize the use of the bandwidth in our network while bringing a 10Gbps connection to our customers.

The flexibility brought by the Ekinops 360 platform and this new 10 Gbps multi-service capability enabled BSO Communication to differentiate itself in the market, thanks to a significant cost advantage resulting from improved management of services to clients across the board, said Sebastien Bernard, Sales Director of Northern Europe for Ekinops.

Ekinops developed this project in record time, two months, added Bernard. Thanks to the T-Chip, Ekinops was able to deploy the technology extremely rapidly compared with what other equipment manufacturers could have done, he emphasized.

We are pleased that our T-Chip technology has once again allowed us to quickly deliver market differentiating capability for our customers, added Rob Adams, Vice President of Global Marketing for Ekinops. The dynamic nature of the T-Chip allows us to respond quickly to our customers’ needs and provides them with a level of comfort that the Ekinops 360 platform will be able to keep them ahead of their peers when it comes to new, innovative, and cost-effective service offerings.

AirWalk Communications Introduces Powerful, Compact Enterprise Femtocell, the EdgePoint PRO

RICHARDSON, Texas, March 17, 2009 AirWalk Communications, an innovator in IP-based cellular radio network equipment, today introduced its EdgePoint™ PRO, a compact enterprise femtocell that brings optimal cellular service to enterprise offices and other in-building facilities.

AirWalk announced EdgePoint PRO in advance of the CTIA Wireless 2009 conference, where AirWalk will demonstrate the new unit in Booth 8127 during the April 1-3 event in Las Vegas.

EdgePoint PRO is designed to assure mobile phone users secure continuous coverage and mobility in a variety of enterprise settings, regardless of the location’s proximity to the macro cellular network. The unit acts as a cellular access point and plugs directly into an existing broadband connection to extend 3G wireless CDMA services for voice and data. The EdgePoint PRO leverages the enterprise’s broadband link for backhaul which reduces operators’ capital expenditures and maximizes macro network efficiencies.

With the 1xEV-DO EdgePoint PRO, enterprises have a viable alternative to a WiFi network. Users are able to use their existing mobile phone or laptop with data aircard to access high-speed data. In addition, the EdgePoint PRO in 1xRTT allows users to rely on their mobile device as their primary phone both inside and outside their workplace.

Operators are showing remarkable interest in EdgePoint PRO because it is an affordable and reliable solution for cellular-challenged indoor settings where the macro network simply cannot accommodate coverage requirements, said Serge Pequeux, president and CEO of AirWalk. EdgePoint PRO can contribute to cellular usage by extending seamless service into the enterprise. In-building minutes of use are offered at a fixed rate while supporting additional enterprise voice and data applications.

A totally untapped market to date is the one for enterprise femtocells, observed Allen Nogee, Principal Analyst for In-Stat. These devices will not only allow both small and large businesses to provide a better wireless signal for their employees, but also to offer wireless/PBX integration at a level never before possible.

EdgePoint PRO has an unrivaled clustering feature that assures soft handoff between multiple units and the macro network. A single EdgePoint PRO supports up to 28 users with 200mW of power. It is available in 1xRTT or 1xEV-DO Rev. A, and it is available as a wall mount or rack mount unit. EdgePoint PRO integrates the base transceiver station (BTS), base station controller (BSC), packet control function (PCF), and operations and maintenance (O&M).

In 2008, AirWalk introduced its residential and small office femtocell, the EdgePoint.

Ohio Consumers’ Counsel asks state regulators to reconsider phase-out of AT&T Ohio’s white pages directories

Press release

Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel

Contact: Ryan Lippe

Ohio Consumers’ Counsel asks state regulators to reconsider phase-out of AT&T Ohio’s white pages directories

AT&T Ohio’s and other companies’ customers may be affected

COLUMBUS, Ohio - March 13, 2009 - The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) is asking the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to reconsider its allowance of AT&T Ohio to scale back its distribution of residential white pages directories. The OCC will file its Application for Rehearing later today, highlighting the impact the PUCO’s Feb. 11 decision could have on customers of AT&T Ohio and other telephone companies in AT&T Ohio’s service area.

Based on statewide data from Connect Ohio, a public-private partnership to increase access to broadband technology, the OCC concluded that approximately a half-million AT&T Ohio customers either have no computer or no access to the Internet - AT&T Ohio’s alternative to using the traditional phone book for reference. This includes approximately 410,000 customers without a computer and an additional 82,000 customers without Internet access.

In its original request, AT&T Ohio sought a waiver of an existing Minimum Telephone Service Standard (MTSS) requirement from the PUCO, which would enable the company to discontinue delivery of its printed directory to all but those customers specifically requesting one. Instead, an electronic directory would be available on the Internet and CD-ROM.

“Although some customers may have a limited need for a printed copy of the white pages, we are concerned that a significant number of customers will no longer have access to a resource they have relied upon for decades,” said Janine Migden-Ostrander, Consumers’ Counsel. “Most customers may not be aware that they need to specifically request a copy and as a result, be denied access to important information that they need. There should be a comprehensive informational campaign to educate consumers about their directory options.”

In response to AT&T Ohio’s request to limit distribution, the OCC had recommended an “opt-out” program that would allow customers to elect not to receive a residential white pages directory. Under the OCC’s proposal, delivery would continue to customers who do not opt out. The OCC also requested a phase-in period of up to two years for customers to adjust to the changes. In addition, the OCC called for customers to receive notice of the change in residential white pages delivery through bill messages and bill inserts. Under the PUCO’s decision, customers will be notified only through information in AT&T Ohio’s yellow pages directory.

Several other telephone companies that operate in AT&T Ohio’s area - including Cavalier Telephone, NuVox Communications, Sage Telecom, Talk America and tw telecom - who traditionally have relied on AT&T Ohio to publish directories for their customers also have asked the PUCO to waive their MTSS obligations to distribute the white pages directories to their customers. As with AT&T Ohio’s customers, the OCC is concerned that these companies’ customers will not be adequately notified of the need to contact AT&T Ohio for a printed residential white pages directory.

Customers also should be aware that AT&T Ohio has informed these companies that residential white pages will no longer be automatically delivered to customers in the Cleveland and Columbus markets. The company may identify additional Ohio markets in the future.

- END -

AiDi develops FISH for environmental and bio sensing applications

Emeryville, CA, March 12, 2009 AiDi Corporation has announced the release of its new Fourier-Transform, Integrated-Optic Spatial Heterodyne Spectrometer (FISH) for environmental sensing and health diagnostics. AiDi has been known for its high-quality broadband optical communication products. Using its expertise in planar lightwave circuits (PLC), AiDi enters the optical sensor business by extending the boundaries of the latest technology.

The FISH device utilizes an interferometric Fourier transform technique called Spatial Heterodyne Spectroscopy to measure high resolution optical spectra with high optical throughput. The implementation of the interferometer on a palm-size PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuits) chip offers a number of advantages, such as mass manufacturability, compactness, and easy coupling of light using standard PLC components. Because there are no moving parts, the device is highly robust and can withstand harsh environments.

There has been a growing need to develop miniature spectroscopic sensors capable of sensing biological and environmental materials on real-time basis. By using Si3N4 waveguides, we will be able to develop wearable miniature spectrometers, 1cm x 1cm in size, for health care and environmental monitoring at low cost, says Dr. Katsunari Okamoto, Chief Technology Officer of AiDi Corporation.

We will also be able to apply it to 3-dimensional device sensors with this innovative patent-pending technology. We are currently looking for partners in the biotechnology and green environmental technology industries to develop applications for sensor products using the FISH chip as a passive optical core engine, says Kenzo Ishida, President and CEO of AiDi Corporation. Please contact AiDi directly at for more information.

AiDi will be presenting FISH at National Institute of Information Communication Technology (NICT) International Symposium on Challenge to new frontiers in photonic technology, to be held in Tokyo, Japan on March 13, 2009.
