University of San Diego Selects Avenda Systems to Secure Guest Access Deployment

Integration flexibility and unique authentication features help USD deliver secure wireless access

Santa Clara, Calif. - July 20, 2009 – Avenda Systems, the innovator in identity-aware network security, announced that the University of San Diego has selected its eTIPS solution as the key component in the university’s innovative campus-wide network access security initiative. USD has successfully deployed secure, differentiated wireless guest access, enabled by Avenda’s eTIPS platform and self-registration module, in time for the summer rush of conferences and guest activity on campus.

“We looked at a number of competing guest access solutions that could not offer the level of security and access features that we required,” said Doug Burke, IT Director at USD. “My team did a fantastic job working with Avenda to put together a wireless access solution based on identity. This is a big win for us, since it was very easy to implement and customize, and meets all our requirements and standards for web access.”

As part of USD’s timeline, a full calendar of summer camps, conferences and events meant USD had to meet a tight development timeframe to provide wireless access to its on-campus guests. Avenda’s eTIPS was selected as it uniquely authorizes network access based on a user’s identity. It supports USD’s entire wireless network infrastructure, as well as users’ various computing platforms. In addition, Avenda’s solution provided the ability to offer self-registration and payment or promo code payment options. According to university officials, it was a major requirement for the solution to remove the IT team from the account creation process, and integrate with USD’s existing CASHNet PCI compliant payment tool to provide a real-time means of verifying the identity of campus visitors.

“The Avenda product is exceptionally easy to use and deploy, it provides good classification between users, and delivers amazing reporting tools,” Burke continued. “Users tell us that the new portal is very logical and easy to walk through. As an added bonus, we no longer receive calls that there’s a problem using wireless guest access.”

The initial engagement between USD and Avenda was prompted by Avenda’s attractive Migration Program. The new solution from Avenda replaces a previously purchased platform from Identity Engines, now part of Nortel Networks. Besides offering a platform trade-in allowance, Avenda provided complimentary policy assessment and deployment assistance.

Avenda’s solution easily integrates with USD’s existing Aruba Wireless Controllers, which is important due to a move to 802.1X network access control. USD also plans on integrating Avenda into their Cisco switched network later this summer as future plans include extending guest access to USD’s wired network and implementing port-based switch security.

“USD’s requirements and phased deployment are a classic example of how our product can satisfy immediate network security and access needs,” said Krishna Prabhakar, CEO of Avenda Systems. “And along the process, customers are finding new ways to leverage our flexible architecture and policy model.”

WASHINGTON, D.C., and DALLAS, July 15, 2009 – The Communications Workers of America and AT&T Inc. today announced that a tentative agreement has been reached in the Core Wireline contract negotiations covering approximately 18,500 employees in CWA District 4 (AT&T’s Midwest region).

The agreement, which will be submitted to the district’s membership for a ratification vote in coming days, was reached after nearly five months of negotiations. The contract expired on April 4 and employees have worked under the terms of the expired contract while negotiations continued.

CWA President Larry Cohen said the negotiations reflected the current tough economic times and that the current health care structure in the United States is unsustainable. “This tentative agreement maintains our members’ standard of living and safeguards quality health care benefits, which is critical to the well-being of all families. It’s important now to move forward in the remaining negotiations and resolve our outstanding issues. I’m pleased that AT&T will continue to work with us and others on comprehensive health care reform so that companies like AT&T that provide quality health care are no longer penalized in this country.”

AT&T Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson applauded the patience and professionalism of negotiating teams representing both sides. “We’re pleased to have reached a fair and balanced tentative agreement that keeps our core wireline wages and benefits among the best in the nation, while helping to control costs and preserving our ability to compete,” Stephenson said. “These were tough negotiations in difficult economic times and amidst major changes in our wireline business. I am grateful to the representatives of the CWA and AT&T who have worked so hard to achieve this goal.”

The three-year proposed agreement includes pay and pension band increases in each year of the agreement, as well as provisions addressing cost of living adjustments. Health care benefits remain among the best in the nation; the health care plan provides for fully funded preventive care and company-funded health reimbursement accounts that can be used toward any eligible health care expense. The agreement includes new transfer opportunities and other employment security gains that strengthen AT&T’s quality workforce. The agreement also creates broader earnings and job opportunities for some sales titles and premises technicians, who install AT&T services at customers’ homes.

CWA District 4 Vice President Seth Rosen said, “During these very tough times in the Midwest, middle-class workers can use some good news. I am pleased to have reached an agreement that achieves our key goals.”

Negotiations are continuing in other regions where contracts expired on April 4, as they did in Midwest (CWA District 4). They include East (CWA District 1), West (CWA District 9), Southwest (District 6) and Legacy T (CWA ComTech unit). Negotiations are also continuing for Core Wireline contracts with the IBEW for employees mostly in Illinois in northwestern Indiana; those contracts expired June 27. The Core Wireline contract in the Southeast region (CWA District 3) expires on Aug. 8 and negotiations begin in that region July 20.

A total of about 120,000 employees are covered under the various contracts.

LIME Selects Calix to Expand Broadband Deployment across Jamaica

July 13, 2009, PETALUMA, CACalix, the largest communications equipment supplier focused solely on access solutions for broadband service delivery, today announced that LIME, the Caribbean’s leading telecommunications company and a regional business unit within the Cable & Wireless plc portfolio, has selected Calix to deliver broadband services throughout the island of Jamaica.  The Calix C7 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP) gives LIME the flexibility to quickly roll out advanced broadband services to its residential, business, and government customers. This expansion of Calix access solutions into Jamaica also extends the relationship between LIME and Calix, as the Calix Unified Access Infrastructure has already been deployed at other LIME operations in the Caribbean, including the islands of Barbados and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Calix C7 allows us to provide our customers across Jamaica with even faster and more reliable broadband services now and gives us the flexibility to evolve our network to continue to bring more world-class capabilities in the future.”

The Calix C7 offers a number of benefits to LIME:

  • The flexibility and cost-effectiveness of the C7 allows LIME to initially deliver advanced broadband services to a new set of customers throughout greater Kingston and Montego Bay.

  • As part of the Calix Unified Access Infrastructure, the C7 supports any type of delivery media, from copper to fiber, and will allow LIME to seamlessly upgrade its network in the future to support voice and video requirements, without forklift upgrade.

  • The C7 is fully managed by the Calix Management System (CMS), which provides a single network view and a common user experience independent of media type, protocol or service.
