University of San Diego Selects Avenda Systems to Secure Guest Access Deployment

Integration flexibility and unique authentication features help USD deliver secure wireless access

Santa Clara, Calif. - July 20, 2009 – Avenda Systems, the innovator in identity-aware network security, announced that the University of San Diego has selected its eTIPS solution as the key component in the university’s innovative campus-wide network access security initiative. USD has successfully deployed secure, differentiated wireless guest access, enabled by Avenda’s eTIPS platform and self-registration module, in time for the summer rush of conferences and guest activity on campus.

“We looked at a number of competing guest access solutions that could not offer the level of security and access features that we required,” said Doug Burke, IT Director at USD. “My team did a fantastic job working with Avenda to put together a wireless access solution based on identity. This is a big win for us, since it was very easy to implement and customize, and meets all our requirements and standards for web access.”

As part of USD’s timeline, a full calendar of summer camps, conferences and events meant USD had to meet a tight development timeframe to provide wireless access to its on-campus guests. Avenda’s eTIPS was selected as it uniquely authorizes network access based on a user’s identity. It supports USD’s entire wireless network infrastructure, as well as users’ various computing platforms. In addition, Avenda’s solution provided the ability to offer self-registration and payment or promo code payment options. According to university officials, it was a major requirement for the solution to remove the IT team from the account creation process, and integrate with USD’s existing CASHNet PCI compliant payment tool to provide a real-time means of verifying the identity of campus visitors.

“The Avenda product is exceptionally easy to use and deploy, it provides good classification between users, and delivers amazing reporting tools,” Burke continued. “Users tell us that the new portal is very logical and easy to walk through. As an added bonus, we no longer receive calls that there’s a problem using wireless guest access.”

The initial engagement between USD and Avenda was prompted by Avenda’s attractive Migration Program. The new solution from Avenda replaces a previously purchased platform from Identity Engines, now part of Nortel Networks. Besides offering a platform trade-in allowance, Avenda provided complimentary policy assessment and deployment assistance.

Avenda’s solution easily integrates with USD’s existing Aruba Wireless Controllers, which is important due to a move to 802.1X network access control. USD also plans on integrating Avenda into their Cisco switched network later this summer as future plans include extending guest access to USD’s wired network and implementing port-based switch security.

“USD’s requirements and phased deployment are a classic example of how our product can satisfy immediate network security and access needs,” said Krishna Prabhakar, CEO of Avenda Systems. “And along the process, customers are finding new ways to leverage our flexible architecture and policy model.”

The eTIPS solution is comprised of a hardened network appliance, a flexible policy platform, GuestConnect and Microsoft NAP health agents. LIME Selects Calix to Expand Broadband Deployment across Jamaica

Telenor Sweden Selects RAD to Provide High Bandwidth Ethernet Services

MAHWAH, New Jersey, June 16, 2009 – Telenor Sweden, a major European telecommunications carrier, has deployed a second access solution from RAD Data Communications to extend Ethernet services to destinations throughout Sweden that lack fiber infrastructure.

The solution was RAD’s Egate-100, a device that aggregates Ethernet traffic over channelized STM-1/OC-3 or three channelized DS3 (T3) ports for hand-off to a packet switched network (PSN), together with RAD’s RICi network Ethernet termination units (E-NTUs), which deliver Fast Ethernet and mid-band Ethernet traffic to end users over multiple bonded E1/T1 circuits. Within the past year, this combined RAD solution has been used to provide new high-bandwidth Ethernet service to 15 major corporations nationwide.

“What was also beneficial for Telenor was the knowledge that they were already using RAD’s Ethernet-over-E1 technology,” notes Peter Heikenborn, Sales Manager at Lagercrantz Communication, RAD’s Swedish partner, which provided the solution to the operator and assisted in the deployment. “But what was even more convincing was that the new RAD solution reduced CapEx because it is significantly less expensive, even when considering the cost of the SDH node.

“In addition, it significantly lowers OpEx, given that it requires 80 percent less power and space,” Heikenborn adds. “These statistics alone justified deploying the Egate.”

RAD incorporated an SDH terminal into the Egate to enable early testing and customized applications to serve as a one-click provisioning tool. “The assistance provided by RAD’s R&D and Technical Support staff has been highly valued in the process of developing and fine-tuning their provisioning system,” Heikenborn reports.

Due to the success with this provisioning tool, a custom installation now takes just a few minutes. If a customer reports a hitch with the service, the Egate’s network management provides Telenor technicians with a holistic overview of the entire connection and they can quickly fix the problem.

Telecom provider upgrades its eastern ring built on the FSP 3000 platform,  enables enhanced services for clients in southern Idaho

Norcross, Georgia, USA and Martinsried/Munich, Germany. June 8, 2009. Syringa Networks, the premier middle mile provider serving the state of Idaho, is increasing its network bandwidth capacity while simultaneously cutting costs with the implementation of an ADVA Optical Networking solution built upon the FSP 3000 platform.

This new installation significantly upgrades Syringa Networks’ existing 4×2.5Gbit/s DWDM technology with 40×10Gbit/s capability, thereby increasing capacity by 40x throughout its 2000km regional fiber-optic network across southern Idaho.

The equipment is deployed from Boise to Idaho Falls in a diversely routed ring that provides network redundancies to reduce the threat of disruptive outages such as fiber cable cuts to Syringa Networks’ customers.

With this latest installation, Syringa Networks has reduced the environmental footprint of its network while generating significant operational savings. The deployment of Raman amplifiers has reduced the number of amplification sites necessary from 29 to 21, thanks to the amplifiers’ ability to more efficiently span long distances. This reduction in amplifier sites generates savings in both real estate and energy. Additionally, these new efficiencies free existing network equipment to be redeployed elsewhere, if Syringa Networks so chooses.
