Telenor Sweden Selects RAD to Provide High Bandwidth Ethernet Services

MAHWAH, New Jersey, June 16, 2009 – Telenor Sweden, a major European telecommunications carrier, has deployed a second access solution from RAD Data Communications to extend Ethernet services to destinations throughout Sweden that lack fiber infrastructure.

The solution was RAD’s Egate-100, a device that aggregates Ethernet traffic over channelized STM-1/OC-3 or three channelized DS3 (T3) ports for hand-off to a packet switched network (PSN), together with RAD’s RICi network Ethernet termination units (E-NTUs), which deliver Fast Ethernet and mid-band Ethernet traffic to end users over multiple bonded E1/T1 circuits. Within the past year, this combined RAD solution has been used to provide new high-bandwidth Ethernet service to 15 major corporations nationwide.

“What was also beneficial for Telenor was the knowledge that they were already using RAD’s Ethernet-over-E1 technology,” notes Peter Heikenborn, Sales Manager at Lagercrantz Communication, RAD’s Swedish partner, which provided the solution to the operator and assisted in the deployment. “But what was even more convincing was that the new RAD solution reduced CapEx because it is significantly less expensive, even when considering the cost of the SDH node.

“In addition, it significantly lowers OpEx, given that it requires 80 percent less power and space,” Heikenborn adds. “These statistics alone justified deploying the Egate.”

RAD incorporated an SDH terminal into the Egate to enable early testing and customized applications to serve as a one-click provisioning tool. “The assistance provided by RAD’s R&D and Technical Support staff has been highly valued in the process of developing and fine-tuning their provisioning system,” Heikenborn reports.

Due to the success with this provisioning tool, a custom installation now takes just a few minutes. If a customer reports a hitch with the service, the Egate’s network management provides Telenor technicians with a holistic overview of the entire connection and they can quickly fix the problem.

The S2250 and S3250 product families offer complete Ethernet OAM support including 802.1ag (CFM), Y.1731 (CFM & PM), 802.3ah (EFM) to ensure visibility across the entire network.


Service creation and traffic conditioning are easily done in the S2250 and S3250. E-Line, E-LAN and E-Tree services can be done directly at the demarcation point, including VLANs (S-Tag and C-Tag) and Class of Service (CoS) settings.


Bandwidth allocation can be used to limit all upstream and downstream traffic or by filtering criteria for the traffic. Traffic shaping in the S3250 allows for pre-conditioning of traffic to accelerate services and optimize access link bandwidth use by passing the highest priority traffic first.


The S2250 and S3250 offer a variety of intelligent loopbacks that operate at layer 1-2-3-4. These loopbacks can be defined by VLAN, MAC/IP addresses or any combination of layer 2-4 header criteria. The devices also respond to in-band loopback command from most Ethernet test sets and monitoring systems.


The S2250 and S3250 also have 10K jumbo frame support, redundant power options and SNMP V1 and V2c support.


Product Configuration

Net Insight receives an order for contribution network from DR in Denmark

Stockholm, Sweden – 13 May 2009 – Net Insight, leading developer of efficient and scalable optical transport solutions for media, IP and broadcast networks, has received an order from DR in Denmark for a contribution network for video and Ethernet services.


Net Insight’s Nimbra platform will be used to link eight different sites in Denmark. The solution is based on Nimbra 680 that will provide efficient transport of video with guaranteed 100 percent QoS at industry-leading bandwidth utilization levels.


“Net Insight offers a secure and stable contribution platform that handles both video and data traffic between DR’s District and DR Byen”, says Lars Sorner, Project manager at DR. “In the long term DR will also use the platform to integrate all the audio connections for radio.”


The order was received in cooperation with Broadcast Service Danmark (BSD), who are since 2006 operating the Digital Terrestrial TV distribution network in Denmark based on the Nimbra platform. BSD is a wholly owned subsidiary of the two Danish public service broadcasters DR and TV 2/DANMARK and is responsible for the analogue and digital distribution of TV and radio in Denmark. BSD will deliver operations support to DR.
