U.S. Companies Invited to Test & Trial Wireless Communications using Ireland’s Radio Spectrum
Dublin, Ireland – 16 December 2009 – Ireland’s radio spectrum regulatory agency, the Commission for Communications Regulations (ComReg) is promoting Ireland’s radio spectrum as a test-bed to companies and organizations who wish to test and trial wireless projects across all spectrum ranges.
Ireland is particularly suited as a wireless testing environment as it has a wide range of clean radio frequencies available for test and trial. This unique advantage stems from Ireland’s low use of spectrum for defense purposes, its geography, as an island Ireland is relatively free of radio spectrum interference from other countries, and Ireland’s relatively low population density. This means that organizations can test and trial wireless devices in almost any part of Ireland’s radio spectrum, including highly valued spectrum bands such as the 700 MHz band.
Next-Generation Passive Optical Network Test Paves Way for Enormous Capacity Increases
WALTHAM, Mass. – Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is the first telecommunications company in the world to successfully field-test a passive optical network system known as XG PON that can transmit data at 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) downstream and 2.4 Gbps upstream, four times as fast as the current top transmission speeds supporting the company’s all-fiber FiOS network.
The test, conducted recently in southern Massachusetts sets the stage for Verizon to meet the emerging customer demand for a wide variety of devices and applications that require a network capable of transmitting large amounts of data at very high speeds. The local family-owned cable operator dramatically expanded its service footprint in Central Oregon with the first U.S. deployment of the HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Plus) wireless broadband network standard, upgradable to LTE (Long Term Evolution).
