Synchronica Acquires AxisMobile and Raises Funds of $18 Million in 2008

Landmark Acquisition Aims to Build Leading Mass Market Mobile Email and Synchronization Solutions Provider

Royal Tunbridge Wells, 18 August, 2008. - Synchronica plc (AIM: SYNC.LN), the international provider of mobile email and synchronization solutions, today announced that it is acquiring consumer mobile email specialist AxisMobile for USD 4.9 million in new Synchronica shares. Synchronica also stated that it has raised additional funds of USD 10 million from new and existing institutional investors which brings the total funding secured in 2008 to USD 18 million. The additional funds will be used to accelerate product integration and fuel the growth of the combined business in emerging markets, such as China, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America.

The AxisMobile acquisition aims to make Synchronica the leading player in mass market mobile email and synchronization middleware for mobile operators and service providers. The addition of AxisMobile’s complimentary technology, customer base, and routes to market, combined with the injection of USD 10 million of additional funds will enable Synchronica to provide mass market mobile email solutions that work on more than three billion mobile phones in the market today.

AxisMobile’s consumer mobile email platform complements Synchronica’s award-winning Mobile Gateway software by adding email-to-SMS and email-to-MMS gateways, as well as a clientless solution for WAP / XHTML browser access. AxisMobile’s patented Optimizer email transcoding gateway further adds the ability to display a large variety of attachments, such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint presentations on standard feature phones handsets that would otherwise be unable to support such functionality.

The AxisMobile acquisition will also enlarge Synchronica’s footprint in emerging markets by adding a strong sales force and key customer contracts in the relatively untapped areas of Eastern Europe, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and Russia to Synchronica’s existing sales presence in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Customers include: MTS, the largest mobile operator in Russia and CIS with 84 million customers; Megafon, a Russian mobile network operator with 34 million customers across 88 regions of the Russian federation including its Moscow subsidiary Sonic Duo; T-Mobile; IXI Mobile, consumer back-ends for USA, Switzerland, Turkey, Uruguay; E-Plus, Germany’s third largest mobile network operator with 13.6 million customers; as well as a major Chinese bank.

Forecasts point to emerging markets as a breakthrough area for mass market mobile email. Informa predicts that there will be 4.81 billion mobile phone subscribers by 2012, with the next billion subscribers coming from emerging markets where PC and fixed-line penetration is low.

Synchronica’s Mobile Gateway delivers push email and mobile synchronization of calendar and contact data, targeting consumer and business users with connectors to mass market mailboxes, such as Yahoo or Gmail, as well as business mailboxes, such as Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino. Fluke Networks Acquires Intellectual Property, NetAlly Product Line of Former Viola Networks

Technology purchase strengthens visibility and testing of VoIP and other applications

RAD Brings Olympic Coverage to Chinese Provinces

BEIJING, August 11, 2008: China Radio International (CRI) has selected access equipment from RAD Data Communications to enable it to transmit video on demand (VOD) from the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing.

CRI, which maintains a video server at the Olympics, recommended RAD’s RIC-155GE Gigabit Ethernet over STM-1 network termination unit (NTU) to China Telecom as a reliable gateway for transmitting its Ethernet-based video feed over existing SDH lines to various provincial capitals, including Chengdu (in Sichuan), Xian (in Shaanxi) and Changsha (in Hunan).

Using virtual concatenation technology, the RIC-155GE maps the video streams into VC-4 containers for transport across long-haul fiber connections. CRI first deployed RAD’s RIC-155GE in 2006 to run Ethernet-based video over traditional STM-1 circuits. 

“CRI’s previous deployment of the RIC-155GE to carry Ethernet-based services over both wired and wireless SDH transport networks gave them the confidence to propose this solution to China Telecom for their mission-critical IPTV based Olympics coverage,” states Jeremy Zimman, Director of Operations in Greater China at RAD Data Communications. “The RIC-155GE is guaranteed to be a big winner at the Beijing Olympics.”

RAD’s RIC-155GE NTU provides carriers and service providers with a migration path for connecting IP devices with Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to existing SDH or SONET networks at an access rate of 155 Mbps. It is part of RAD’s suite of EtherAccess family of Ethernet access solutions. TM Forum Confirms Management World Orlando Conference Dates, Location and Topics

Conference includes three summits on digital commerce, network transformation and revenue and customer management to target the extending value chain in the communications industry

Morristown, NJ – August 11, 2008 –TM Forum, the leading communications industry consortium, announced today that the organization’s 2008 North American Management World conference will be held at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida from November 16-20th.

After hosting a capacity crowd of more than 1,500 industry professionals last year, Management World moves to the new, bigger Orlando location with a new tri-summit conference format to address the management, monetization and operational issues facing today’s communications, entertainment and online service providers. 

Coinciding with the larger venue, Management World Orlando will boast an increased scope to better assess and discuss the challenges facing communications service providers as they embrace the content, digital commerce and advertising industries. The 2008 conference will include three distinct summits on transformation, revenue management and customer experience, and digital commerce and advertising that will examine each specific area as it relates to the larger topic of convergence.

Acme Packet Nets Four New Customers in Canada

BURLINGTON, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Acme Packet® (NASDAQ: APKT), the leader in session border control solutions, today announced four new customers across Canada that are leveraging Acme Packet’s Net-Net® session border controllers (SBCs) for the delivery of trusted, first-class IP interactive communications. Broad-Connect Telecom, Call Genie, MTO Telecom and Protus have deployed Net-Net SBCs to provide security and SIP session control for delivery of a broad range of VoIP services. Acme Packet SBCs are now deployed in 20 service provider and enterprise networks in Canada.

Acme Packet’s new Canadian customers are using the Net-Net SBCs at both the access and interconnect borders, protecting their networks with the advanced security afforded by Acme Packet’s Net-SAFE® architecture for denial of service (DoS/DDoS) attack protection, network topology hiding and access control lists. In support of wireline access services, Acme Packet’s hosted NAT traversal feature maximizes service reach by enabling calls to traverse firewalls without disruption at customer sites. Three of the four customers—Call Genie, MTO Telecom and Protus— also use the Acme Packet SBC for SIP session routing, leveraging Acme Packet’s integrated routing database to map inbound calls to specific peers or application servers, simplifying their networks and minimizing capital expenditures.

Acme Packet’s new service provider customers are located throughout Canada and include IP telephony service providers (ITSPs), Internet service providers (ISPs) and application service providers (ASPs):

  • Broad-Connect Telecom, a SIP termination provider and ITSP in Toronto, uses Acme Packet’s Net-Net Session Director (SD) to support its hosted VoIP and SIP trunking services for small and medium businesses, as well as SIP interconnects with peering partners.

  • Call Genie Inc., a mobile local search and advertising company with offices in Toronto, Calgary, San Francisco and London, uses Acme Packet to support its voice-enabled search solution. Call Genie delivers the voice-activated directory lookups to its major North American service provider customers across connections secured and routed by Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs.

  • MTO Telecom, an ISP in Montreal, uses Acme Packet SBCs to interconnect with long distance and PSTN termination partners in support of its hosted VoIP services. Acme Packet’s Local Route Table (LRT) allows MTO Telecom to associate SIP endpoints with directory numbers for the purpose of call termination.

  • Protus, a software as a service (SaaS) provider in Ottawa, has deployed a pair of Net-Net SDs in a high-availability configuration in two different locations for geographic redundancy to support its hosted Internet fax service MyFax® and my1voiceâ„¢, a virtual PBX phone service for small and medium businesses.
