Rich Karpinski named editor-in-chief; Jason Meyers returns to Connected Planet

CHICAGO (December 3, 2009) — Connected Planet announces the appointments of Rich Karpinski as editor-in-chief and Jason Meyers as director of custom content and events. Both will report directly to group publisher Wayne Madden.

Rich Karpinski is recognized as one of the telecom industry’s most experienced journalists, having focused on the evolution and intersection of the telecom and Internet industries for more than 20 years. He began his career at Telephony almost two decades ago, holding positions as assistant editor, news director and technical editor. He has held a variety of reporting and editing positions in the telecom and IT press, including stints at Interactive Age, NetGuide, Communications Week, InternetWeek and Network Computing. He returned to Penton Media and Telephony in 2007, serving as executive features editor for and Connected Planet, and spearheaded the recent online transition from to In October, he was named interim editor of the properties.

“Rich is a great journalist and a dynamic leader,” said Wayne Madden. “He’s highly respected in the industry and by the Connected Planet team. He’s the right choice to lead the brand forward editorially.”

In a related move, Jason Meyers has returned to Connected Planet effective December 1, as director of custom content and events. In this newly-created post, Jason will direct sales strategy and execution of custom content projects created on behalf of advertisers, as well as projects created in conjunction with industry organizations, such as show dailies. Jason will be developing new “in-person” and virtual event products and possible partnerships on events, working very closely with our editorial team and sales team on content and sponsorship sales. He will also be actively engaged in the Connected Planet management team as we continue to map our strategy and develop the Connected Planet brand and portfolio.

Meyers was most recently director of conferences for SUPERCOMM 2009. He originally joined the Telephony staff in 1993 as an assistant editor and cut his editorial teeth reporting on telecom technology and business trends. From 1999 to 2006, Meyers was editor-in-chief of Telephony and helped spearhead Telephony magazine’s entry into custom media products and live events. He was managing director of Penton Media’s custom media division until November 2008.

Telephony magazine, an industry icon for 100+ years, closed in August 2009.
