Ciena’s CoreDirector replacement could be delayed

The next version of Ciena’s (NASDAQ:CIEN) CoreDirector optical switching platform appears to be delayed, according to George Notter, managing director of communications equipment equity research at Jefferies & Company, who cited multiple unnamed carriers as sources.

Though expectations vary, Notter said in a research note this week that the new product may start shipping some time in the second half of this year and that subsequent back-office testing could push its actual field deployment in some cases to early next year.

“In total, the system is at least one year late vis-à-vis the original delivery dates,” Notter said. more

Cogent: Qwest asking too much for long-haul assets

Cogent Communications (NasdaqGS: CCOI) examined the long-haul assets of Qwest Communications (NYSE: Q) and opted not to pursue an acquisition of them because the asking price was too high relative to its profitability, Cogent Chief Executive Officer Dave Schaeffer said at an investor conference today.

“The combination of the management’s expectation of valuation coupled with [its] negative cash flow quickly led us to conclude that we were not going to be an active bidder on that asset,” Schaeffer said in response to a question. more

Alcatel-Lucent cutting R&D to focus on next-gen tech

It’s another rebuilding year for Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU).

“Things are not off to a great start for Alcatel-Lucent,” RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue wrote after the vendor’s first-quarter earnings report today. “Challenged segments remain carrier and enterprise, although there were some bright spots in IP and WCDMA. Application software grew in the mid-single-digit rate (at constant currency), while services continue to chug along, growing in the high teens. A notable aspect of the company’s rebuilding is its reduction in research and development (R&D) spending, particularly in the back half of the year, as it looks to partners to help carry the load of innovation. Though Alcatel-Lucent’s R&D spending increased 3% sequentially in the first quarter, the vendor said it will decrease as the year goes on, particularly in the second half. more
